Umpherston Sinkhole

Updated: May 2

Umpherston Sinkhole

Umpherston Sinkhole was once a limestone cave that collapsed, creating a giant sinkhole. In 1886, James Umpherston created this beautiful sunken garden that you can view from the top and the bottom.

A viewing platform at the top has lovely views down into the sinkhole, where you can see the terraced gardens. Then, take the steps down to the bottom, where you can wander around and enjoy the gardens.

Directly behind the stairs to the bottom is a walking path behind the overhanging vines. There is also a fountain and other walking trails around the gardens.

Umpherston sinkhole is open from dawn to dusk and is lit up at night. At dusk, you can visit to feed the possums fruit and vegetables. The park has a kiosk, toilets, a BBQ, and picnic tables.
