Top 5 Waterfalls to Swim in near Cairns

So many stunning waterfalls are located in beautiful, lush rainforest settings a short drive from Cairns in Queensland. Here are our favourite Top 5 waterfalls where you can swim.


Millaa Millaa Falls ~ Queensland.

Millaa Millaa Falls is the most popular and picturesque waterfall in Northern Queensland and is located 98 kilometres south of Cairns in the beautiful Atherton Tablelands. This stunning waterfall is created when the water plummets 18 metres over a sheer cliff face into a pristine swimming pool below. It is the perfect spot for a refreshing swim and to cool off in the tropical Queensland heat.


Josephine Falls ~ Queensland.

Josephine Falls is located in the Wooroonooran National Park, a scenic 75-kilometre drive from Cairns. It’s an easy 700-metre walk through lush rainforest to this stunning multi-tiered waterfall. From the bottom viewing platform, you can access a large rock pool where you can swim in the cool, crystal-clear green waters; there is also a natural rock waterslide. This waterfall is very popular with locals and tourists alike. 


Clamshell Falls ~ Queensland.

Clamshell Falls is located in the beautiful Behana Gorge, 32 kilometres South of Cairns.  To enjoy this stunning multi-level waterfall, you need to walk up the 3.2-kilometre (one-way) sealed walking track.  Then, when you reach the top of the track, you can climb down the rocks and swim in the fresh, clear water of the large swimming hole.


Ellinjaa Falls ~ Queensland.

Ellinjaa Falls is an amazing waterfall in the Wooroonooran National Park, located 104 kilometres from Cairns in the Atherton Tablelands. It is an easy 200-metre walk to the base of the falls, where you can see the water cascading 12 metres over the lava columns into the shallow rock pool. The lush green rainforest and the pristine water hole make Ellinjaa Falls an ideal spot for a refreshing dip; there is even a little ledge behind the falls you can sit on.


Crystal Cascades ~ Queensland.

Crystal Cascades is a series of water holes and waterfalls along Freshwater Creek in the Baron Gorge National Park, 17 kilometres from Cairns. An easy 1.5-kilometre walk along the creek will bring you to several cascading waterfalls and a large swimming hole. The rock pool is surrounded by large granite boulders and is refreshingly cool, even in the hot summer months.
