Three Falls Circuit

Updated: Jul 27

Three Falls Circuit

The Three Falls Circuit is a 6-kilometre loop that starts at the Mt Field Visitor Centre. The first waterfall you will see is the stunning Russell Falls, followed by Horseshoe Falls, part of the Tall Trees walk, and the lovely Lady Barron Falls.

This walk is one of my favourite walks in Tasmania. It is a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of the lower part of Mount Field National Park.

The Three Falls walk is one of the 60 Great Short Walks

of Tasmania

The Walk - 6 Kilometre Circuit - 2.5 Hours - Grade 3

This walk starts by heading to Russell Falls, you will find the track directly behind the Mount Field National Park Visitors Centre.

The first section is a nice easy wander through stunning mossy, rainforest with lovely tall eucalypt trees. The track is well-maintained and meanders along the banks of the beautiful Russell Falls Creek.

After about 700 metres, you will reach the viewing platform for Russell Falls, an amazing two-tiered waterfall cascading 50 metres down Permian siltstone and vertical sandstone columns.

Once you have enjoyed Russell Falls continue along the track towards Horseshoe Falls, another breathtaking waterfall.

This short section of the track is mainly uphill with several sections of stone steps and then a stepped boardwalk. It takes about 10 minutes to reach Horseshoe Falls.

You will see the top of Russell Falls along the way, and there have been sightings of platypus in this section of the creek.

Continue along the path to the viewing area of Horseshoe Falls, this delightful waterfall is set in a natural amphitheatre with lovely ferns and mossy rocks.

When you have seen Horseshoe Falls, head back and cross over the bridge and continue through the rainforest for another 1.5 kilometres.

You will then arrive at the Tall Trees walk, an easy one-kilometre circuit within the Three Falls Circuit.

Huge swamp gums (Eucalyptus Regnans), the tallest flowering plant on the planet, are found along this track.

After passing the Tall Trees, you will cross Lake Dobson Road, continue walking through the forest for a further 1 kilometre, and you will reach Lady Barron Falls.

Lady Barron Falls is a lovely waterfall that cascades down an 8-metre drop before gently flowing down the creek.

The viewing platform at the base of the waterfall provides great views and is an excellent place to take photos.

This waterfall is particularly impressive after good rainfall in the area.

The circuit continues back to the Visitor's Centre on an undulating trail with a steep wooden staircase to be climbed midway.

This is a truly enchanting walk, with three waterfalls to see, a beautiful mossy rainforest and some of the tallest trees in the world.

Directions to Mount Field National Park

Mount Field National Park is 70 kilometres north-west of Hobart. From Hobart, head north-west on the Brooker Highway (A10) to New Norfolk.

Once at New Norfolk, follow the winding road of B61/B62, turning into Mt Field National Park on your right. There is plenty of parking near the Visitor Centre.
