The Nut at Stanley
The Nut is an immense flat-topped, volcanic plug rising one hundred and fifty metres from the water's edge in Stanley on the North West Coast of Tasmania. It is a landmark, and you can see it all over Stanley.
You can wander around the Stanley admiring the lovely, well-preserved colonial cottages and buildings, visit the historic Highfield house, take a chairlift ride to the top of the Nut, and walk around the perimeter.
The Nut Walk is one of the 60 Great Short Walks.
The Walk - 2 kilometres - 1 hour Circuit - Grade 3
Enjoy three hundred and sixty-degree views over Stanley and the Bass Strait from the various lookouts along the walking track around the top of the Nut.
The walk begins at the top of the Nut, and there are two ways to get there. You can walk to the plateau of the Nut along the very steep 'Zig Zag Track', approximately 400 metres. Or, the easier option is to take the Nut Chairlift, a relaxing 250-metre ride to the top with stunning views on the way up.
The Chairlift is open daily from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm (weather dependent).
Along the well-formed walking track, you will reach several great lookouts with views of Highfield House, The Boat Harbour, and the Bass Strait. Many information boards with unique facts about the Bass Strait birdlife and the indigenous history of The Nut, Stanley, and Tasmania are also located there.
Looking carefully, you may see a wallaby or other native marsupials living on The Nut. There is also a lovely variety of wildflowers and plants along the walking track.
