The Naracoorte Caves in South Australia are a World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important fossil sites. There are 28 caves in the National Park, four of which are open to the public for self-guided, guided, and adventure caving tours.

You can view the interesting displays at the Visitor Centre, explore the Wonambi Fossil Centre and Fossil Hunters Playground and wander around the Roof Top Loop Walk.

Other facilities include the Cave Cafe, BBQs, Picnic Tables, Toilets, Camping Ground and a large carpark suitable for motorhomes, buses and caravans.

We viewed the Alexandra Cave, Stick-Tomato Cave and the Wonambi Fossil Centre. Other tours available are the Victoria Fossil Cave and the Blanche Cave Bat Tour.

You can explore Stick-Tomato Cave on a leisurely self-guided tour through two chambers to see robust columns and stalactites. The first chamber has lovely natural light filtering through, and the second is dark and mysterious, with automated lighting.

The Wonambi Fossil Centre recreates a time when megafauna roamed the world. Palaeontologists have been studying the fossils and bones in the caves for over 40 years. They have identified 130 species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds, and you can learn about them here.
