Mount Coolum
Mount Coolum was created about 26 million years ago and is a laccolith formed when a dome-shaped bulge of magma cooled below the Earth’s surface. Its impressive dome shape rises 208m above sea level and provides spectacular 360-degree views of the coast and hinterland from the summit.
The walking track is located in the Mount Coolum National Park, and parking is available at the corner of Tanah Street and Jarnahill Drive. This hike is 1.6 kilometres long and rated as moderate; there are also 600 stone steps.
The first part of the track is a rocky path that meanders through open forest and bushland.
Then, the steps begin as you head up the rocky mountain. It is quite steep and can be slippery when wet, so watch your step.
As you continue hiking up the mountain, you will see several areas where you can stop to enjoy the views and catch your breath.
At the summit, you will have 360-degree panoramic views over the Sunshine Coast and hinterland.
This is a very popular walk, with approximately half a million people hiking up the track each year.
