Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World

Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World is a stunning, privately owned garden with huge aviaries full of local and exotic birds. It is located on the outskirts of Maleny township.

There is an entrance fee to visit the gardens and tour the aviaries, and it is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.

The highlights of our recent visit included the Birds Tour, a walk around the Gardens and hand-feeding the miniature animals. We then enjoyed a cheese box overlooking the Glasshouse Mountains.

Bird World opened in November 2013 and now has five walk-through aviaries with more than 700 native and exotic birds from around the world.

To visit the aviaries, you need to book an interactive guided tour. Tours go for approximately 50 minutes and are available throughout the day. As you wander through the different aviaries, the tour guide talks about the various types of birds and their behaviours and antics.

Most of the birds are rescue birds and birds from deceased estates. Because these birds have been hand-raised, they willingly interact with humans, can land unexpectedly on your head or shoulders, and may even steal your buttons or jewellery.

With stunning views over the iconic Glasshouse Mountains, this unique, privately owned garden spans over 23 acres and is surrounded by magnificent rainforests.

Work started on this sloping site in 2005, and the gardens and facilities were opened to the public in 2012.

The layered and terraced gardens have themed sections that include lakes, bridges, and waterfalls, and there are more than 6 kilometres of walking paths throughout.

You can feed the miniature animals with specially prepared food from the gift shop. In the farmyard, you can see Mediterranean miniature micro donkeys, miniature goats, baby-doll sheep, miniature pigs and chickens.

At the end of our visit, we sat in one of the gazebos with amazing views of the Glasshouse Mountains and enjoyed a cold drink and cheese box from the cafe.
