Maits Rest Rainforest
Maits Rest Rainforest is an ancient cool-climate rainforest with towering Myrtle Beech trees, stunning tree ferns and a moss-covered forest floor. It is home to a variety of wildlife and more than 4o species of birds.
Learn more about the forest on the information boards and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful forest.
In 1914, Maitland Bryant was the district's first state forests inspector. On his regular patrol from Apollo Bay to Horden Vale, he would rest his horse in this lovely patch of rainforest, which is now called Maits Rest.
At Maits Rest, you will see one of the world’s tallest flowering plants – the giant mountain ash eucalyptus (Eucalyptus regnans). One of these trees is over 200 years old and can grow up to 100 metres tall. Keep an eye out for the black Otway snail, long-nosed potoroo, wallabies, koalas and ring-tail possums. We saw a koala in the trees in the carpark.
