Loch Ard Gorge ~ Great Ocean Road

Updated: Jul 27

Loch Ard Gorge

Loch Ard Gorge is a stunning sandy beach surrounded by 30-metre sandstone cliffs on the Great Ocean Road. You can view it from the lookout or take the steps down and enjoy the beach and the exciting caves and rock formations. It is only a few minutes from the Twelve Apostles.

The gorge is named after the clipper ship Loch Ard, which sailed from England and shipwrecked here in 1878. Fifty-four passengers were on board, but only two survived.

Tom Pearce was a nineteen-year-old sailing apprentice, and Eva Carmichael was a nineteen-year-old Irish girl travelling with her family. After Tom was washed ashore on the sandy beach, he could hear Eva calling for help, and he swam out and rescued her. They spent the night in a cave before Tom scaled the cliffs and went searching for help.

After being rescued, Eva spent three months recuperating and returned to Ireland, and Tom continued his sailing career.

There are several other short walks from the Loch Ard Gorge carpark, including the Geology walk, Loch Ard Wreck Lookout, Thunder Cave Lookout, Living on the Edge track, Razorback Lookout and the Cemetry.
