Laratinga Wetlands
The Laratinga Wetlands were constructed in 1999 and are a productive water reclamation facility. They are also a wonderful place to walk and watch the many varieties of birds.
The wetlands are an essential habitat for many resident, migratory and nomadic birds, and more than 150 species have been recorded here.
There are walking trails and boardwalks through the wetlands, bird hides, toilets, picnic and barbecue areas.
We wandered along the two-kilometre Rosella Trail circuit, which starts at the main picnic area. The walk's highlight is seeing the black swans and many other birds.
The hike is rated as easy and will take about 45 minutes to complete. The paths are wide, flat, and suitable for prams; you can also take your dog for a walk here.
Near the picnic area are four impressive murals, part of the ‘Batpiori’ Airbrushing Project. The murals depict an ancient First Nations man titled 'Elder', a rural scene titled 'Home', a faux graffiti-ed wall titled 'Time', and a cockatoo titled 'Local'.
The project aimed to give young Aboriginal artists an opportunity to display their unique art in a rural setting.
In this area, there are also sculptures by Robert Wuldi and an interesting Bee Hotel.
