Lake Tyrrell
Lake Tyrrell is Victoria's largest inland salt lake. Located seven kilometres from Sea Lake, its stunning scenery, amazing sunrises, sunsets, and star-filled night skies attract tourists from across the world.
The name Tyrrell derives from the Aboriginal word "Tyrille," which means Sky or Space, and there are plenty of both at Lake Tyrrell.
This is one of the best places in Australia for star navigation. Its dark and endless skies provide the perfect environment. A Sky Lounge is located near the edge of the lake, where you can view the excellent southern hemisphere's constellations.
Lake Tyrrell can be completely dry in some seasons. However, when it is wet and warm, it turns pink from the red pigment secreted by the pink microalgae red marine phytoplankton.
The lovely pink colours and the reflections in the shallow waters make this a fantastic spot to photograph, especially at sunrise, sunset and on a cloudy day.
There is also a viewing platform, information boards about the region and toilets available.
