Updated: May 3

Labillardiere Peninsula

The Labillardiere Peninsula is located on Bruny Island, Which lies off the southeastern coast of Tasmania and is separated from the Tasmanian mainland by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.

Bruny Island has some of Tasmania's most beautiful natural environments, with towering dolerite cliffs, fantastic white sandy beaches, and abundant sea birds and wildlife.

The Labillardiere Walk is one of the 60 Great Short

Walks of Tasmania

The Walk - 18 Kilometres Circuit - 6 Hours - Grade 4

This is a long and varied walk around the Labillardiere Peninsula; it features impressive coastal and mountain views, sandy beaches and sheltered bays.

For a shorter walk, you can do the Luggaboine Circuit, which is 4 kilometres and takes about 2 hours.

The walking track starts at the Jetty Beach campgrounds in South Bruny National Park. Along the track, you will find a fantastic variety of colourful wildflowers, including native orchids.

We walked the track clockwise as we had heard the views were better this way.

The first part of the track is along an old 4WD path and follows along the western coastline of the Labillardiere Peninsula, with stunning coastal views. Continuing, there is a short, steep walk up Mount Bleak, where you can see Partridge Island; this is the hike's halfway point.

From Mt Bleak, follow the track as it descends back to the coast of Hopwood Beach. Walk along the beach until you see the track again, and then follow it through low scrubby bushes to Butlers Beach.

At the end of Butlers Beach, the track continues along the coastline for a few kilometres and ends at the beautiful Jetty Beach.

Directions to Bruny Island

The only way to access Bruny Island is by ferry. The Bruny Island ferry departs from Kettering on the mainland, and Kettering is located 40 minutes south of Hobart.

The 20-minute ferry trip offers excellent views of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. It is a vehicle ferry, so you can drive your car or motorhome onto Bruny Island.

South Bruny National Park is approx—ninety minutes from the Ferry terminal on Bruny Island.

On Bruny Island, drive along the Main Road for 42 kilometres, then turn onto Lighthouse Road and go for another 20 kilometres. Take a right turn into the Jetty Beach Campgrounds, and follow this until you reach the car parking area.
