Hills Homestead

Hills Homestead

The Hills Homestead Walk is one of the most popular walks from Wilpena Pound. If you continue from the Homestead, you will get beautiful views from the Wangara Lookout. Wilpena Pound is in South Australia’s Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, 430 kilometres north of Adelaide.

The Walk - 6.6 kilometres - 2 Hours - Easy

This walk starts near the Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre. Wander along the road through the Pound Gap, along the edge of Wilpena Creek.

There are several information boards along the track, and you will pass under the tall river red gums and pine trees. You will then reach the water hole, where you can stop and enjoy this beautiful tranquil spot; there is a seat near the water.

The track then continues past another information shelter to Sliding Rock. The path splits in two here, and you can walk under Sliding Rock or climb the trail above it. Keep an eye out, as you may see kangaroos or an echidna along the trail.

After Sliding Rock, you cross the creek along a wooden boardwalk, then climb a short, steep section before reaching Hills Homestead. You can't enter Hills Homestead, but you can read about the history of the original inhabitants of the cottage and their struggles with the harsh Australian conditions. There are toilets, picnic tables and some old relics near the Homestead.

Once you have seen Hills Homestead, follow the track past an Adnyamathanha sculpture until you reach the Wangara Lookouts.

Wangara Lookout

Wangara Lookout offers outstanding panoramic views across Wilpena Pound.

The lower lookout is 300 metres beyond Hills Homestead, and the Upper Lookout is another 300 metres further uphill. The track is very steep and rocky; take care.
