Goblin Forest

Updated: May 5

Goblin Forest

The Goblin Forest Walk is the most leisurely walk within the Blue Tier Forest Reserve in northeast Tasmania. Wander along the walking track and over boardwalks through the beautiful forest.

This walk is suitable for wheelchairs. Along the track, you can admire the moss-covered rocks and trees, marvel at the masses of lichens, and listen to the small trickling creeks.

The Blue Tier Forest was once an area of extensive tin mining. In 1958, it was made a forest reserve, and in 1997, the reserve was extended to what it is today. There are several longer walks available here as well.

The Goblin Forest walk is one of the 60 Great Short Walks

of Tasmania

The Walk - 400 metres Return - 20 minutes - Grade 1

This is an easy 400-metre circuit walk, which is wheelchair friendly and perfect for all the family.

You will see information boards detailing the area's mining history along the walk. You can also see how the rainforest has regenerated since tin mining destroyed the area more than a century ago.

The young trees are in stark contrast to the more mature ones in the older forests in Tasmania.

As you enter the forest, it's like a fairy tale world with trees and rocks covered in thick moss, and the ground looks like it's covered with snow.

What looks like snow is a fantastic mosaic of Coral lichens (Cladia retipora) and Reindeer lichens (Cladina confusa) covering the ground.

If you continue wandering through the forest, you will see tree ferns, brightly coloured mushrooms and fungi, beautiful freshwater creeks, and tiny waterfalls.

It is a lovely walk that the whole family can enjoy!

Directions to Goblin Forest

From Launceston, take Highway A3 to Lottah Road, which meanders through Gould's Country for nearly 10 kilometres. The road will turn into Polmena Road, which is made of gravel and full of potholes.

After a bumpy ride for about 3 kilometres, you'll find the Polmena carpark and the trailhead for the Goblin Forest Walk.
