Franklin River Nature Trail

The Franklin River is probably the best-known river within this World Heritage area. This lovely walk through the cool temperate rainforest along the Franklin River will give you an idea of the beauty within this wild river wilderness.


The Franklin–Gordon Wild Rivers National Park World Heritage Area is the essence of true wilderness. Apart from a few short walks, most of the park is remote and inaccessible.

The Walk - 1 kilometre - 20 Minutes -Grade 1


This easy circuit walk along the banks of the Franklin River will take about 25 minutes to complete.


Wander through the lush temperate rainforest with lovely myrtle and sassafras trees and a variety of lichens and moss. The track passes by the Franklin and Surprise rivers, with boardwalks and viewing areas along the way.


Halfway along the trail, there is a seat by the river where you can sit, relax and enjoy the wonderful forest ambience. There are several interesting information boards along the walkway.


This walk is suitable for wheelchairs (with assistance) and strollers.



Directions to Franklin River Nature Trail

From Queenstown, you head east along the Lyell Highway (A10) towards Derwent Bridge for 56 kilometres. The Franklin River Nature Trail is on the highway's right-hand side.


From Derwent Bridge, head west along the Lyell Highway for 26 kilometres. The car park is on the left-hand side of the Highway.
