Waikerie - South Australia

Waikerie is a small town on the cliffs above the Murray River in the heart of The Riverland region of South Australia. It is 177 kilometres southeast of Adelaide and is surrounded by broad-acre farms, vineyards, and citrus groves.

Waikerie was established in 1894 when the first settlers arrived by paddle steamer. It is now a popular holiday destination for fishing and watersports on the River Murray. It has a supermarket, fuel station, bakery, hotel, lovely Art Gallery, and interesting street art.

When we visited Waikerie, we wandered around the main street, viewed the Silo Art and then meandered along the Cliff Top walk to the Riverfront area.

Waikerie has several supermarkets, a bakery, a hotel, shops to browse in, a lovely Art Gallery and interesting street art.

Jimmy DVate and Garry Duncan painted the Waikerie silos; they took 16 weeks to complete and used nearly 500 litres of paint. They are titled Healthy River and Healthy Community and feature local fauna and flora, including a giant yabby, the endangered regent parrot and the rain moth.

The Waikerie Cliff Top Walk is 3.6 km long and takes about an hour; we started near the Silo’s and walked along the cliffs down to the riverfront area, the track is undulating, and there are several lookouts with beautiful views over the River Murray and the floodplains.
