Explore Surat

Updated: May 2

Surat - Queensland

Surat is a charming town on the banks of the beautiful Balonne River, 447 kilometres west of Brisbane. It has several cafes, a traditional hotel, supermarkets, and a fuel station. The Balonne River meanders through the town and is a popular spot for walking, picnics, fishing and camping.

When we visited Surat, we started the day with a coffee from The Timber Crate cafe. We then explored the Cobb & Co Changing Station Museum. We wandered around town and along the river before visiting the Aboriginal Interpretative Shelter.

The Timber Crate cafe in the Surat New Royal Hotel offers coffee, cake, breakfast, lunches, and a lovely range of gifts.

The Cobb & Co Changing Station Museum is located at the original site of the Cobb & Co Store and was the drop-off point for coach passengers and goods. This excellent museum is open daily and has a fantastic 25,000-litre freshwater aquarium with many native fish species. The social history museum has regularly changing displays depicting the lifestyles of yesteryear, including a lovely restored 14-seater Cobb & Co. coach.

In Lions Park, you can view the Tree of Hope, wander along the Warroo walk, and learn about the area's history. Continue wandering along the Balonne River, which has exercise equipment, a small rock climbing wall, picnic tables, and BBQs.

The Shire Hall is an unusual, striking timber building on the corner of Cordelia and William Streets. It was designed by Harry Marks, completed in 1929, and is now Heritage Listed.

The Surat Aboriginal Interpretative Shelter on the outskirts of town is a series of storyboards housed within an interpretative shelter, which tells the story of the original Mundy and Cleven camp, where many local indigenous people lived in humpies until the late 1960s
