Penola - South Australia


Penola is a lovely country town near the world-famous Coonawarra wine region. It has wonderful heritage buildings, cafes, restaurants, antique stores, and galleries to browse in. Penola is 385 kilometres southeast of Adelaide via Murray Bridge and Naracoorte.


Wander along Petticoat Lane, the oldest residential area of Penola and see the historic timber and stone cottages.



Penola was the home of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint. The Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre offers more information about her and her life.


The heritage trail around the town has an interesting selection of historical buildings dating back to the late 1800s.



A short drive from Penola, you can visit the Coonawarra wine region, famous for its outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon.


At Father Woods Park, seven carved wooden sculptures depict Father Julian's and Saint Mary's lives.
