Melrose - South Australia
Melrose is a lovely, historical town situated in the foothills of Mount Remarkable. It is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges and was officially proclaimed in 1853. Melrose is located 276 kilometres North of Adelaide in the Southern Flinders Ranges.
It has two great country pubs, several cafes, a mini supermarket and fuel supplier, a post office, a caravan park, a mountain bike store and the Jacka Brothers Brewery.
You can wander around town and enjoy the lovely parks and many heritage buildings on the Melrose Historical Walk.
On Mt Remarkable, you will find several hiking and mountain bike trails; at the historic War Memorial, there is a lookout with lovely views over Melrose.
Attractions near Melrose
This wonderful gorge is located in the Mt Remarkable National Park. Enjoy the view of the stunning ochre-coloured walls and the towering gum trees; when you reach The Narrows, the walls of the gorge are only a few metres apart.
Hancock's Lookout
At Hancock’s Lookout, on the top of Horrocks Pass, you can admire wonderful views over Spencer Gulf, Port Augusta, Port Bonythong, Mount Laura, and the Middleback Ranges. There is also a free camping spot here.
