Hahndorf - South Australia

Hahndorf is a lovely historic German village 26 kilometres from Adelaide. Established in 1839, it is Australia’s oldest German settlement, and along the beautiful tree-lined main street, there are cafes, traditional German hotels, art galleries, shops and boutiques to browse in.

When we visited Hahndorf, we wandered along Main Street and looked at the German Village Shop, the Hahndorf Sweets Shop, and the Hahndorf Academy. We then tried a traditional German Hot Dog from the Wunderbar Dog Haus.

The iconic German Village Shop is open daily and has an impressive selection of cuckoo clocks, traditional beer steins, Christmas decorations, nutcrackers and lovely traditional toys.

Hahndorf Sweets is an old-fashioned lolly shop open daily with all your favourite sweets and chocolates. Located inside a little cottage built in 1853, it is the oldest sweet shop in South Australia and one of the oldest buildings in Hahndorf.

The Hahndorf Academy is housed in a beautiful 150-year-old building with a museum, art gallery and visitor information centre. The Angel of Handorf sculpture, part of the Hills Sculpture Trail, is on the lawns outside the building.

The Wunderbar Dog Haus serves traditional German Hot Dogs from a quirky-themed Hot Rod shop. We tried the Pig Dog and the Plain hot dog, and both were delicious.

After lunch, we went to the Beerenberg Farm for afternoon tea and picked some fresh strawberries before wandering along the Hahndorf Heritage Walk.

Beerenberg Farm is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or afternoon tea. In the farm shop, you will find a huge selection of jams, sauces and condiments, and from November to April, you can pick your own delicious strawberries from the strawberry patch.

Along the Heritage Walk, you will see many interesting buildings that date back to the mid-1800s when German immigrants settled in Hahndorf. Many of the buildings have an information plaque describing the building.

Great range of tours through the Adelaide Hills and surrounding areas for everyone to enjoy.
