Goomeri ~ Queensland
Goomeri is a small country town 265 kilometres northwest of Brisbane, nestled in the heart of Queensland’s South Burnett region.
The town is surrounded by cattle grazing and dairy farming country and is home to Australia’s only Pumpkin Festival, which is held on the last weekend in May each year.
Goomeri is a former timber town that retains a relaxed old-world atmosphere, with many of the buildings constructed in the 1920s still in use today.
When we visited Goomeri, we wandered around the town centre, saw the town clock, visited the bakery and the bookshop, discovered interesting heritage buildings and explored Kinbombi Falls.
The town centre has a traditional hotel, a supermarket, an amazing bakery, several cafes, and more interesting stores to browse in.
In the centre of town is a stunning clock called the ‘Lest We Forget’ clock, which was built in 1939 as a memorial to locals who had died in the war. You can see the letters of "Lest We Forget" in place of numerals on the clock face.
The Goomeri Bakery is open daily from 6.30 am to 3.00 pm and features an amazing selection of pastries, baked goods, local jams, fresh flowers and so much more. A few years ago, a local lady spent months in the south of France learning French baking techniques and patisserie skills and now you can try these delicious treats and great coffee.
Further down the street, you can pop into the Wimberley & Co Bookstore, which has an amazing selection of books, gifts, puzzles and coffee.
Historic Buildings
Many of Goomeri’s buildings were constructed in the 1920s and retain all their original charm.
Near the big pumpkin statue, you will see an information board with all of the places of interest, and as you wander around the town, you will see small plaques with historical information on the buildings.
The Goomeri Bakery was originally Florence’s store, a grocery, hardware and produce business that operated from 1935 to 1948.

The Phat Wag butcher is in the middle of the street, a butcher's shop has operated on this site since the 1920s.

There is also another lovely park opposite the Goomeri Emporium which has a playground, toilets and a fun Queensland alphabet trail. Goomeri also has a museum that is open on the weekends.
Kinbombi Falls
Ten kilometres from Goomeri you can explore Kinbombi Falls. There is a large carpark which is also an RV camping area with toilets, bins and picnic tables.
We walked down the 100-metre track to Lookout 1. Kinbombi Falls is created when Kinbombi Creek cascades over the steep rocky cliffs into the deep gorge below. It is best explored after good rainfall in the area or the waterfall will not be flowing. You can also wander down the 225 stairs to get to the base of the waterfall.
