Evandale - Tasmania
Evandale is a lovely historic village located 20 kilometres south of Launceston. The Australian National Penny Farthing Championships are held here every year. It is a National Trust-listed Georgian village with cafes, Air BnBs, and antique and craft shops.
Many of these buildings date back to the early 1820s and were originally built by convicts.
Notable historic buildings include St Andrews Uniting Church, which was built in 1839 and has a classical bell tower and Doric columns.
The Clarendon Arms Hotel was built in 1847 and still operates as a hotel today. Its beer garden has walls constructed by convicts that are over 160 years old.
Royal Oak was completed in 1840 and now the adjoining stables house, Evandale Antiques.
St Andrews Church of England was built with many of the original bricks from the previous smaller church and consecrated in 1872.
Other interesting historic buildings include the Post Office, Blenheim Inn, the old State school which is now the visitor centre, Solomon House and the Water Tower.
In Rodger’s Lane you will see a memorial to Lieutenant Colonel Harry Murray. He was the most highly decorated allied soldier in World War 1 and a recipient of the Victoria Cross.
