Devonport - Tasmania

Devonport is a bustling coastal city situated where the Mersey River meets the Bass Strait. It is home to the Spirit of Tasmania, the ferry that links Tasmania to the mainland. Devonport is located 98 kilometres from Launceston and 277 kilometres from Hobart.


The main central business district is on the west side of the Mersey River and has a shopping mall, cafes, hotels, and restaurants. Devonport has many great beaches and walking tracks.




Wander along the western side of the River Mersey and enjoy the coastal cliffs and distinctive red and white striped lighthouse at Mersey Bluff.


Explore the Bass Strait Maritime Centre, a wonderful museum with great exhibits of the history and maritime heritage of the Devonport region. Have a turn

Wander along the foreshore to see the Spirit of the Sea Sculpture, where you may also see the Spirit of Tasmania arriving or departing.



A short drive from Devonport, you can explore the Tasmanian Arboretum, where you have a very good chance of seeing a platypus.

A little further afield, you can discover Preston Falls, Leven Canyon and the Castra Circuit, with three waterfalls.

Tasmanian Arboretum ~ Tasmania.

Tasmanian Arboretum

The Tasmanian Arboretum is a wonderful collection of trees in a beautiful and peaceful landscape. Wander along the lakes and look carefully, and you may see the elusive platypus.


Preston Falls ~ Tasmania.

Preston Falls is a lovely waterfall formed when Preston Creek plunges 25 metres into a deep gorge. The enclosed viewing platform is situated on the top of the cliff face and provides excellent views of the gorge below and the waterfall.


Castra Circuit ~ Tasmania.

Castra Circuit

Along the Castra Circuit, you will see three Wonderful Waterfalls: Silver Falls, Castra Falls and Step Falls. The bush track is a 6.5-kilometre circuit and will take about two and a half hours to complete. Some parts of the track are quite steep and can be muddy.


Leven Canyon ~ Tasmania.

Leven Canyon

Leven Canyon can be seen from two lookouts along the track. From both lookouts, you can look down into the stunning canyon and see the wonderful Leven River flowing through the steep forest.
