Campbell Town - Tasmania
Campbell Town is a lovely, well-preserved historic village nestled on the banks of the Elizabeth River. It is located 68 kilometres South of Launceston and 134 kilometres North of Hobart on the Heritage Highway. It is a fascinating town to visit.
Campbell Town is full of interesting colonial history, wonderful antique and speciality shops, green parks, cafes and bakeries.
One of particular interest is the Foxhunters Return - an amazing example of a 19th-century inn built in 1834; it is now a sensational bookstore.
The Red Bridge is the oldest bridge still being used on a major highway; it was built by convict labour in the 1830, and today, more than 2 million vehicles drive over it each year.
At Blackburn Park near the Red Bridge are some wonderful detailed sculptures by Eddie Freeman, carved into 80-year-old macrocarpa pine trees.
You can take a self-guided walk along High Street and learn about Tasmania’s convicts by reading their stories on the red brick trail.
