Birdwood - South Australia

Birdwood is a small historic town on the banks of the Torrens River in the Adelaide Hills, 44 kilometres East of Adelaide. Established in the early 1840s, it was originally called Blumberg until 1916, when the name was changed to Birdwood.

Many German Towns’ names were changed in South Australia after World War 1. This quaint town has an interesting hotel, cafe, bakeries, art gallery and an antique shop to browse in.

While visiting Birdwood, we wandered along Main Street, looked at the quirky Blumberg Hotel, the Flour Mill and other historic buildings, and then visited the world-class National Motor Museum.

The Blumberg Hotel was built in 1856 and is one of the most photographed hotels in the Adelaide Hills. It is open every day from 11.00 am.

The National Motor Museum is Australia's largest motor museum, with more than 400 cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles on display. It is open daily from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.
