1770 & Agnes Water ~ Queensland

Located at the Southern end of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, 520 kilometres from Brisbane, the coastal towns of 1770 and Agnes Water are popular and relaxing holiday destinations. They have beautiful beaches, unique activities and lots of great short walks.

The lovely seaside town of 1770 is nestled between the stunning coastline and pristine national park; it is also the only town in the world with a number for a name.

We checked out the Captain Cook monument on our recent week-long stay in 1770 and Agnes Water, enjoyed coffee and cake overlooking Main Beach and wandered along the Paperbark Trail. We also took a joyride on a LARC, ate an award-winning vanilla slice and watched the sun setting over the Marina. We hiked along the 1770 Headland Walk, explored the markets, and ate delicious 1770 gelato.

In the Joseph Banks Regional Park, you will find the Captain Cook Monument commemorating where Lieutenant James Cook anchored the Endeavour in Bustard Bay on the 24th of May, 1770, and made the first landfall by a European in Queensland. Joseph Banks also came ashore and collected 33 plant species to study.

The Main Beach at Agnes Water is 6 kilometres long and is a great surfing beach. It is claimed to be the most northern surf beach on the east coast of Australia and is popular with surfers of all ages. Holidays Cafe is located inside the NRMA Caravan Park overlooking the Main Beach at Agnes Water. They are open for breakfast and lunch and serve delicious coffee and cakes.

The Paperbark Forest Walk is a lovely 400-metre track that takes about 15 minutes to complete through hundreds of paperbark trees. The walk is unique as it is designed with stepping stones and boardwalk areas, so you can wander through the thick, lush undergrowth and admire the spectacular Paperbark Trees.

On a lovely sunny afternoon, we climbed aboard the bright pink LARC and enjoyed a one-hour joyride with breathtaking scenery and interesting commentary.

A LARC is a Lighter, Amphibious, Resupply Cargo vehicle, an aluminium-constructed craft that can propel itself through water and on land. The tours leave from the Marina, and you drive down the road, then splash into the water and cruise across the water before driving along the edge of the Eurimbula National Park.

The 1770 Marina is the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, and it's the perfect spot to sit back and relax with a coffee and an award-winning vanilla slice from the Marina Cafe. You can watch the boats heading out to Lady Musgrave Island or fishing on the reef for the day. It's also a very popular spot for watching the sunset over the water at the end of the day.

From the parking area on the 1770 Headland, there are several walking tracks you can wander along to Wave Lookout and Bustard Bay Lookout; both have stunning views over the ocean and Bustard Bay.

You can explore the Discovery Coast Rotary market on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. It is held under the trees at the SES grounds in 1770 and has a range of local produce, food trucks, and arts and crafts.

The 1770 Gelato Co is located in the centre of Agnes Water and is a local business selling over 30 flavours of premium, small-batch gelato made from Queensland milk and other local ingredients.
