Crater Falls

Updated: May 3

Crater Falls ~ Cradle Mountain, Tasmania.

Crater Falls

Crater Falls is located in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. It is a series of 5-10 metre high waterfalls in a gully dense with cool temperate rainforest vegetation. Myrtle-beech fragrances the air in this beautiful rainforest. The falls cascade down a broken cliff surface, changing directions along the way into a crystal-clear pool of water.

You start this walk from Ronny Creek on Cradle Mountain and walk across the boardwalk through open buttongrass moorland.

Continue along the track until you cross a bridge over Ronny Creek. (Do not take the path to Waldheim)

Immediately after the bridge, keep right on the track (the left trail goes to Lake Lilla Track and the Wombat Pool). The path becomes quite steep and continues uphill for approx. 1.5 kilometres.

Continue past the Horse Track trail, and in approximately 400 metres, you will reach the wooden viewing platform for the bottom of Crater Falls. You can access the base of the falls by some stairs below the viewing platform.

You can continue up the wooden steps to view more cascades of Crater Falls.

We then returned on the same track; you can keep going up the stairs and do the Crater Lake Circuit.
