Top 10 Things to Do on Bruny Island, Tasmania
Bruny Island is located off the southeast coast of Tasmania, separated from the mainland by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. It has some of the state's most stunning natural scenery, with towering cliffs, sandy beaches, and an abundance of sea birds and wildlife.
The Bruny Islands' area is 362 square kilometres, and its length is approximately 50 kilometres. North and South Bruny are joined by a long, narrow sandy isthmus (also referred to as “The Neck”), which is an important habitat for native wildlife.
The Neck is the thin isthmus of land that connects the northern and southern islands that makeup Bruny Island. You can climb the timber stairs at the Truganini Lookout and enjoy the breathtaking 360-degree views over the isthmus.
Cape Bruny Lighthouse
The heritage-listed Cape Bruny Lighthouse, 114 metres high, is perched atop the southern headland. From here, there are stunning views of the sweeping southern ocean, the wild Tasman Sea, South East Cape, Whale Head, and the small islands dotting the coastline.
Adventure Bay is a large eastern-facing bay on South Bruny. It is one of the main townships and there is a General Store and Caravan Park there. Adventure Bay Beach is a popular spot for swimming as it is a very sheltered beach on the island.
White Wallaby
White wallabies are Bennett's wallabies, with a rare genetic mutation that gives them their white fur and pink eyes, ears, and nose. Your best chance to spot one is at Adventure Bay in the late afternoon or early morning.
The Fluted Cape Track in South Bruny National Park offers beautiful coastal views and unique birds and wildlife. You may even see a White Wallaby. The Walk is a 4 Kilometre Grade 4 Circuit and takes about 2 1/2 hours.
Mavista Rainforest Walk
The Mavista Nature Walk is a beautiful short walk (1.4 kilometres) along a well-maintained track through the lovely rainforest. Meander through the lush fern forest along the banks of Waterfall Creek. It takes about half an hour.
The Arch
The Arch on Bruny Island is a fascinating natural arch formation on the beach along the Cape Queen Elizabeth track. The walking track starts directly across from Bruny Island Honey. The walk is 6 kilometres and will take about 2 hours.
Eat Oysters at Get Shucked
If you love Oysters, drop into Get Shucked. It is a locally owned and operated oyster farm and bar. The oysters are harvested, shucked and plated up fresh daily, and they are delicious. You'll be hard-pressed to find a fresher oyster or a more authentic experience.
With fantastic views of the Bruny Island coastline and the D’entrecasteaux channel, the Labillardiere Peninsula walk is a 15-kilometre circuit. It starts from Jetty Beach in the South Bruny National Park and takes about 6 hours.

Waking early to watch the sunrise is a magical way to start the day. The best places on Bruny Island to watch the sunrise are along the beach at Adventure Bay or from the top of the Lookout at the Neck.
