Australia Zoo Sunshine Coast

Updated: May 2

Australia Zoo

Australia Zoo is known for being the home of the legendary Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. Located on 110 acres on the Sunshine Coast with over 1200 animals, it is still owned and operated by the Irwin family.

Australia Zoo is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and it offers live shows and keeper talks, where you can learn more about the animals and wildlife conservation. Click here for the Australia Zoo website.

When we arrived, we jumped on the Shuttle Bus to the Africa Savannah section of the Zoo.

The Africa Savannah section is a large open range area with Giraffes, Zebras, and Rhinos. The zoo has many signs with facts about the animals and their habitat. We also saw Cheetahs and meerkats here.

We then walked over the bridge to Bindi’s Island, where we climbed to the top of the treehouse and wandered around, watching the lemurs, echidnas, and Aldabra Tortoises.

Continuing along the path, we came to the Southeast Asia section of the Zoo; in this section, there are Tigers, Red Pandas and Elephants.

The Tiger Temple is an ancient Southeast Asian temple that houses Sumatran Tigers. We enjoyed watching the tigers wander around their large enclosure.

We were fascinated watching the cute red panda climb along the branches of the trees. At Elephantasia, you can see the Sumatran elephants daily between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in their stunning themed enclosure.

As we continued our walk around the zoo, we enjoyed seeing all the Australian animals and birds, including koalas, kangaroos, emus, cassowaries, brolgas, and a wombat, going for a stroll.

Every day at 1.15 pm, The Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior Show is held in the Crocoseum. It features birds, snakes, and crocodiles feeding. The staff also shared a wealth of information about wildlife conservation.

After the Wildlife Warrior Show, we grabbed a snack from the Crikey Cafe and watched the crocodiles being fed in the pools below us.

At the Otter enclosure, we watched Asian small-clawed Otters roll around and swim in their pool. We then walked over to Roberts Reptile House, which houses a great selection of snakes, frogs, lizards and other reptiles.

As we walked around the Zoo, we saw many large dinosaur statues, which were fun to take photos with.
