Arkaroo Rock
Arkaroo Rock can be discovered in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park in South Australia. The Park is in the central Flinders Ranges, approximately 450 kilometres north of Adelaide. It is considered one of South Australia's most iconic destinations.
The Akurra Adnya (Arkaroo Rock) walk is a popular walking trail, and along it, you will see some of the best examples of Adnyamathanha rock art.
The trail brings you to a rock shelter containing ochre and charcoal images depicting aspects of the Yura Muda for Ikara (Wilpena Pound).
The Walk - 3-kilometre Circuit - 2 Hours - Moderate
This walk begins at the Arkaroo Rock Carpark, where you will see the walk signs; there are also toilets, picnic tables and information boards.
The walking track starts as a red dirt path heading gradually uphill through the dense bush. There are lovely views of the walls of Wilpena Pound and the surrounding mountain ranges.
The path gets a bit rockier and steeper as you continue uphill, but there are several seats to rest and enjoy the views.
When you are near Arkarooo Rock, you will see a massive rock on the path; after admiring this, turn left and follow the path approximately 200 metres to Arkaroo Rock.
When you reach Arkaroo Rock, you will see a wooden viewing platform with a bench to sit and view the art. A large weld mesh fence protects the rock. However, the holes are big enough to see and take photos of the artwork.
The rock paintings are considered to be over 5,000 years old, and this place holds great significance to the Adnyamathanha people. The paintings are a mixture of charcoal and white and red ochre.

A Park Pass is required to access the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and can be purchased online (before your visit) or at the Wilpena Pound Visitor's Centre.
