Walks within the national park will take you through a diverse array of vegetation and terrains, including marshlands, wet gullies and pockets of rainforest.

Douglas-Apsley National Park protects an important dry eucalypt forest and numerous rare and endangered plants and animals.

Apsley River Waterhole and Gorge is one of the

60 Great Short Walks of Tasmania

The Walk - 5.6 kilometres Return - 3 Hours - Grade 3

This walk starts as a gentle stroll on a great track through open woodland before reaching the lovely Apsley Waterhole after about 600 metres.

This beautiful, tranquil pool in the Apsley River is a great place to stop and reflect on the beauty of nature, gaze into the crystal clear waters, and relax. On a warm day, you can wade or swim in the delightfully clear water.

You then need to walk across the rocks and cross the river; the track continues along an undulating path through a dry, open sclerophyll forest.

The track then descends steeply down a series of rock steps to the Apsley Gorge. Take care when these are wet.

Steep dolerite cliffs surround the Apsley Gorge. There are deep pools and small cascades down the river.

In dry weather, you can make this a circuit walk by returning along the river. Otherwise, return the way you came.

Notes:

  • Parking is available near the entrance to the walking track, and parking is suitable for buses and motorhomes.

  • You can take a short 10-minute walk to Douglas-Apsley waterhole or a longer walk to the Gorge.

  • Toilets are available near the camping area.

  • Picnic tables are near the camping area.

  • No Phone Coverage.

  • The Bush camping area is only accessible from the walking track.

Douglas-Apsley National Park is a lovely area to have a picnic and a swim in the warmer months.
